PLMM is a six-month residential program designed to enhance the leadership and management capacities and the personal and spiritual development of pastoral missionaries in response to the demands of the contemporary Church.
Drawing from both the tradition of the Church (notably Vatican II) and the insights of present-day leadership and management theories and practices, the program fosters learning in an Asian cross-cultural environment, cultivating one’s relationship with the Good Shepherd, and acquiring knowledge and skills, with special attention to the following themes:
- Leadership: A Pastoral Approach
- Leadership in Context
- Leadership Ethics for Pastoral Care
- Leadership for Mission
- Management: A Pastoral Approach
- Management Skills for Pastoral Leaders
In particular, participants strive to attain two key outcomes:
To be in Communion with the Church:
One who understands that each is called to fulfill the mission out of the communal stance of a “new way of being Church” based on Vatican II and contemporary magisterial teachings seeking to respond to present contexts (by being participatory, prophetic, inculturated, missionary, pilgrim, poor, dialogical, servant, discerning). One, then, who articulates the specific demands of a “new way of being Church” for one’s context, affirms one’s particular Church where it does well, challenges it where it needs to improve, and promotes concrete alternatives and measures for development.
One who understands that loving and obeying the Church requires critical thinking and contributing to the Church’s renewal, tapping the “sensus fidei”, integrating insights from the social sciences, and rooting out all forms of clericalism. One, then, who collaborates creatively and effectively with others—lay people, religious, clerics, all people of goodwill—for the transformation of cultures and societies towards the values of God’s reign.
To be Critically Reflective and Creative:
One who understands that effective and creative responses to challenges of the mission require careful data-based and theologically grounded study and consultation that goes beyond formulaic and stereotypical approaches. One, then, who applies skills, such as for accompaniment, leadership, management, collaboration, communal discernment, formation, and socio-pastoral analysis.
Completion of the PLMM program can count towards earning the ecclesiastical degree Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) in Spirituality and Leadership or the civil degree Master of Pastoral Leadership and Management (MPLM), both of which degrees are administered by Loyola School of Theology (LST) in Ateneo de Manila University.
